NASSIT SWEARS IN THIRD NEW BOARD OF TRUSTEES
He went on to say that as Trustees, their first strategy will be to assess what NASSIT has been doing in the past few years; what programmes are currently being undertaken and what plans are on foot for the short, medium and long terms. This, he said, would guide them to determine the future directional role of the scheme. In his statement the Director General, Mr. Edmund Koroma, said that the current reserve of NASSIT is 238.9 Billion Leones as at May 2008, and that the Trust has insured a population of 140,204 members. He appealed to the new Board to help facilitate the Validation of their members, as it is a blessing to them. He encouraged all present to help NASSIT to continue being a success story in Sierra Leone. The Director, Legal and Secretariat Division, Sengu Koroma performed the official swearing in ceremony.

The third Board of Trustees of the National Social Security and Insurance Trust, NASSIT, was sworn into office. at a ceremony held at the Board Room on Monday, 5th May 2008 in Freetown.
Chairman of the occasion, Mr. A R Turay In his opening remarks, the Chairman for the programme Mr. A R Turay who is also Coordinator, Strategy and Policy Unit in the Office of the President, said that NASSIT is now a household name in the country. He implored on the new Board members to be dedicated to duty and to ensure that the continued growth of the Scheme. Mr. Turay applauded the efforts of Management and staff for their determination to see the success of the Trust, adding that the composition of the Board is result-orientated.
Minister of Employment & Social Security, Hon, Minkailu Mansaray In his address, the Minister of Employment and Social Security, Hon Minkailu Mansaray, said that when NASSIT was established Seven years ago, many people had little or no faith in the possibility of its survival as a Social Insurance entity. But today, he went on, the fears of those people have been laid to rest. He added that the many achievements of the scheme, especially in the areas of infrastructural development and the huge investment undertakings, are clear testimonies of the success story that is still unfolding.
The Hon Minister added that in today’s competitive global economy, Social Security is considered not only as a moral imperative, but an economic one as well. He explained that delivering equitable social and economic development requires a sustainable social security system, adding that as Minister supervising NASSIT, he has entered into a Management contract with the President, noting that the Strategic Plan of the Trust forms part of the deliverables of that contract. The new Chairman, of the Board of Trustees, Mr. Jacob Kanu, in his address said that he has been following with close interest the positive strides that NASSIT has been making throughout the period of its existence, particularly during the difficult interregnum when no Board existed. He added that he is aware of the responsibilities of the Trust, namely to cater for Old Age, Invalidity and Survivors benefits.
